Maybe everyone else already knew this, but the Spotted Towhee discussion
sent me off to Rising (1996) and Pyle(1997) to learn about subspecies. Turns
out the PNW coastal subspecies, Pipilo maculatus oregonus, is the darkest
and least spotted of the Spotted Towhee. That includes the spots on the wing
coverts and the tail. The PNW interior subspecies, P. m. curtatus has spots
which Pyle describes as moderate in size.

Gotta' be one of the reasons I enjoy Tweeters.
