Today two of us left Bridgeport at 8:30 and went east on Hwy #l7, then south
to Atkins Lake, and back by way of Mansfield. Highlights, which seemed to
make an unusual list for this time of year: at Chief Joseph Dam, Brewer's
Blackbird, Thayer's Gull and heard a Say's Phoebe. About l4 miles out of
town at Weisburn's pond, Mt. Bluebird and 2 Snow Buntings. Atkins Lake:
Snow Goose, Sandhill Crane, Tundra Swan, Lesser Yellowlegs, Long-billed
Dowitchers, Lapland Longspurs,Merlin. Saw several Rough-legged Hawks, N.
Harriers, Red-tailed Hawks, Kestrels and one Prairie Falcon. Near bottom
of Bridgeport/Mansfield hill saw about 20 Chukar. Saw many kinds of ducks,
inc. about 600 Pintails. (Mallards, Gr. winged Teal, Canvasbacks, Redhead,
Wigeon, Gadwall,Bufflehead, Ring-necked), also Pied-billed and Eared Grebes.
Total species, 48. Probably the last of the shorebirds, but what a neat
mix. Meredith (and Rick Hendrick)
