Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This
recording was made Thursday October 29. If you have anything to add call
Harry Nehls at 233-3976.

A female or immature CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR was identified October 24
at the South Jetty of the Columbia River. This secretive bird remains
apart from the LAPLAND LONGSPURS that are also in the area.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was seen October 24 flying near Autzen Stadium in
Eugene. It has not been relocated.

The LITTLE GULL at Summer Lake was not seen last week-end, but may still
be in the area.

A large number of VARIED THRUSHES were observed October 25 at Cape Arago,
near Coos Bay. Large numbers are also being reported along the northern
California coast. CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES are also being reported in
western Oregon in unusual numbers away from their regular coniferous
habitat.

An AVOCET, 5 WILLETS, 6 LONG-BILLED CURLEWS, and 4 MARBLED GODWITS have
been reported during the week from Pony Slough on Coos Bay. On October 24
an OLDSQUAW and a SABINE'S GULL were at Yaquina Bay.

Among the many birds seen on a four and a half hour sea watch at Boiler
Bay Viewpoint October 24 were heavy southward movements of PACIFIC LOONS
and HEERMANN'S GULLS, 3 PINK-FOOTED SHEARWATERS, 80 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 20
SHORT-TAILED SHEARWATERS, a PARASITIC JAEGER, and a few ANCIENT
MURRELETS. The next day 2 COMMON TERNS were there.

Among the ALEUTIAN CANADA GOOSE flock at Pacific City Octoer 26 were a
group of WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and an immature EMPEROR GOOSE.

Many EURASIAN WIGEON were reported from western Oregon during the week.
Small RED CROSSBILL flocks are now moving into many parts of western
Oregon. Late SWAINSON'S THRUSHES were reported October 26 from Portland
and October 27 from south of Grants Pass.

A group of 9 immature SURF SCOTERS were in the Clackamas Lagoon near
Oregon City October 24. Two CLARK'S NUTCRACKERS were near the top of
Marys Peak October 22. A REDHEAD and a GREATER SCAUP were near the Fern
Ridge Dam October 24. A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was on the Lane Community
College Pond in Eugene that day.

A WHITE-HEADED WOODPECKER was in a stand of knobcone pines in the
Siskiyou Mountains south of Murphy October 25. They are very uncommon in
that area.

A HARRIS'S SPARROW was at Fields October 25. A CATBIRD was there the next
day.
