I'll jump in here (being a rabbit afficianado and having two as pets 8-)

Yes, rabbits *can* scream. It's quite a hideous sound, and only done out
of absolute terror/pain.

However, rabbits, aside from their thumping which I'm sure everyone knows
about, also grunt and growl. Their growl is more of an elongated grunt,
and neither is very high volume at all. One must be pretty close to really
hear it. Our female growls at our giunea pig quite frequently, and both
our male and female grunt to each other and us occasionally. They can also
make sort of a groan, which we usually only hear when capturing our female
to medicate her (she hates the stuff). The grunt/groan/growl all sound
pretty similar.

Wild rabbits are also able to make all of these sounds as well.
