While it is probably worthwhile to follow this up to make sure, it is
very unlikely that this palearctic species would turn up in such numbers.

It is more likely that one of the following was seen:
1) Black-throated Gray Warbler - wrong habitat, the color and
pattern are correct (the size is quite definitely not).
2) Gray Jay - black and white and gray, travels in packs, likely
to be seen on the ground.
3) Clark's Nutcracker - black and white and gray also travels
in packs.
