Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This
recording was made Thursday September 3. If you have anything to add call

On August 27 a BLACKPOLL WARBLER was netted and banded nine miles east of
Arlington at the mouth of Willow Creek.

During a foggy evening August 29 both LEACH'S and FORK-TAILED
STORM-PETRELS were attracted to the lights of the lumber mill parking lot
at the junction of Highway 101 and Carpenterville Road just north of
Brookings. This happens fairly regularly during foggy late summer
evenings.

Shorebirds, VAUX'S SWIFTS, and SWAINSON'S THRUSHES were the most obvious
migrants during the week.

A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER and up to 5 AMERICAN and PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVERS
on the North Spit of Coos Bay were among the 24 species of shorebirds
seen in the Bandon-Coos Bay area during the week.

An offshore fishing trip out of Depoe Bay August 29 found 2 SOUTH POLAR
SKUAS, 14 BULLER'S SHEARWATERS, and 250 ARCTIC TERNS among the more
regular species.

An ANCIENT MURRELET was with a group of alcids off Cape Falcon, north of
Manzanita August 22. A large flight of SOOTY SHEARWATERS flew close off
the South Jetty of the Columbia River August 28. With them were 2
PINK-FOOTED SHEARWATERS, a POMARINE JAEGER, and 4 PARASITIC JAEGERS.

Good numbers of waterfowl are now arriving on Sauvie Island including 16
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and 5 SANDHILL CRANES. Shorebirding is picking up
there with a possible RUFF, several PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and a
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER reported during the week. AMERICAN PIPITS are also
being seen.

A STILT SANDPIPER was reported August 28 among the large number of
shorebirds at Baskett Slough NWR. A BLACK TERN was there that day. Ankeny
NWR has been very good for shorebirds, but became very quiet during the
week. Stewart Pond in Eugene is the local shorebird hotspot. A
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER has been there for some time.

On August 30 at least 20,000 BARN SWALLOWS were observed coming to
evening roost near Grand Island, north of Salem.
