Columbia Estuary Report - 9/7/98

A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was circling over Camp Rilea on Aug 31. It is
still possible to find singing ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS in the willows
of Ft Stevens State Park.

The Lower Columbia River Birders went out on Saturday (9/5). A
singing LINCOLN SPARROW was near the foot bridge on the bike path.
TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS have returned and a hybrid HERMITxTOWNSEND was
seen on the sandy path NW of the bike path. The HEWAxTOWA had a
bright yellow head with a brown auricular spot. The yellow went
down the breast to mid-belly. The wings were very black with two
strong wingbars. The back was Townsend's Warbler green.

As reported in the Seawatch report, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES were
seen at SJCR. MARBLED MURRELETS in basic plumage were also seen.

AMERICAN PIPITS have been moving through the area over the
weekend. 12 were at parking lot C on Friday, 6 at Wireless
Rd. A VESPER SPARROW was reported from parking lot C, Sunday.
A LARK SPARROW was in parking lot C Monday.

Shorebird watching is still pretty disappointing. A notable
movement of COMMON SNIPE was evident over the weekend. Two
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were at the shorebird flats Friday.
