Last Friday George Shelton, Washington Department of Natural Resources =
(DNR), Southeast Region in Ellensburg, withdrew Unit # 3 from the =
Overpass Timber Sale! This is the "old growth or late seral ponderosa =
pine" stand which many of you visited and some of you wrote letters to =
the DNR, asking them to withdraw this unit from the proposed timber sale =
because of it's importance to wildlife and particularly birds dependent =
on larger diameter Ponderosa Pine and the associated snags in this stand =
located in the transition zone south of Robinson Canyon on the L.T. =
Murray Wildlife Area. There are few good examples of this type of late =
seral ponderosa pine habitat left in eastern WA. =20

George insists it was a silvicultural decision rather than anything to =
do with being the sale that has generated more letters from the birding =
community than any other in the Southeast Region!! A special thank you =
to Jim Stephenson, TFW Biologist with the Yakama Indian Nation, Cindi =
Confer, TFW bio with WDFW and all the birders who joined the Eastside =
USFS Neotropical Bird Training this Spring, the Nature Conservancy, =
Kittitas Audubon and the rest of you for your interest. I made over a =
dozen trips up that road in the last three years trying to get more =
people involved. It wasn't until the birding community got involved and =
passed the word along that we got the DNR's attention.

For those who haven't made it, but want to visit this stand in the =
future, feel free to request a map of the L.T. Murray Wildlife Area by =
e-mail or calling me at (509) 925-6746. It's a small victory, since we =
started out with a Great Gray Owl and Northern Goshawk in Unit # 1 and =
Unit # 2 may still require opening a closed road through the winter elk =
feeding area in Robinson Canyon, but I appreciate your concern and =
assistance. =20

Good birding!

Doug Kuehn
Manager, L.T. Murray Wildlife Area
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife

P.S. The DNR now plans to trade this "old-growth" stand to Washington =
Department of Fish and Wildlife for timbered land elsewhere. I will keep =
you posted.
