This is a forward from Tom Kogut. wildlife bilogist for Cowlitz Valley =
RD, Gifford Pinchot NF:
Spent the last two days hiking in the southern part of the Goat Rocks
Wilderness doing a wildlife survey. The area is south and east of Walupt
Lake, about 20 miles south of Packwood. The first day I saw a California
quail on the trail at 5400 feet in elevation, which I thought was quite
unusual. Today we saw a beautiful male spruce grouse on the trail at
approximately 4500 feet- came within 10 feet of us, very tame bird
indeed. This is only my second sighting of spruce grouse in the area,
they are uncommon at best. Also lots of raptors migrating along the
Crest, many sharp-shins, red-tails and two adult golden eagles.
