Feature Birds
-------------
BROAD-WINGED HAWK
PARASITIC JAEGER
SOOTY SHEARWATER
POSSIBLE GNATCATCHER SPECIES

Friday, September 11
--------------------
A single adult BROAD-WINGED HAWK was over the Rocky Point Hawk watch area
and the Banding Station there in Metchosin. 2 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS were seen
there on September 7th.

Also at Rocky Point was a MOURNING DOVE.

Offshore were 2 SOOTY SHEARWATERS. Rocky Point is closed to public access
but the hill and shoreline of East Sooke Park provide an equally good
vantage point for seeing these and other fall migrants.

A PARASITIC JAEGER was harassing Common Terns off Cattle Point in Oak Bay.

Also at Cattle Point were 2 Whimbrels.

A bird thought possibly to be a GNATCATCHER species, probably a BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER, hit a window at 4655 Kerryview Drive, which is off Prospect
Lake Road in Saanich. The bird recovered and flew off before positive
identification could be made. It was in this same area that a possible
GNATCATCHER was reported in the spring of 1998. Birders are welcome to
enter this property to see and to look for this bird and the many other
species of Warblers, Woodpeckers and Owls currently feeding at 4655
Kerryview. Confirmation of the mystery bird would be appreciated.

Wednesday, September 9
----------------------
A mature FRANKLIN'S GULL was frequenting the 6th and 7th fairways at the
Victoria Golf Course in Oak Bay from September 6th to 9th.

2 Red Knots in winter plumage were at the foot of Bowker Avenue in Oak Bay.

2 Green Herons were at the pond south of the Duncan Forest Museum in Duncan.

The southward movement of birds is in full swing. This is a great time to
get out to enjoy the fine weather and great birding.
