A column in the Oct. 1998 issue of Microsoft Interactive Developer, p. =
80 got me thinking about what birding references ( indeed, many books ) =
might be like 10 - 20 years from now. A MIT research team has developed =
a chemical compound that can be sprayed on paper ( or any surface ) and =
will produce a stable, black-and-white, printed page when electonically =
charged. When combined with multigigbyte memory such a book can store =
as many books as found in a small-town library. So you would have the =
convenience of the normal book format with the power of the computer =
age. I suppose you might even be able to download reference material =
from the web and create your own birding reference book. When combined =
with a computer CPU and a keyboard/mouse, this could be an alternative =
to the current notebook computers. The estimated cost of a 300-page =
"book" would be $300 - $500. If a color "book" can be developed and the =
publishing/copyright problems can be worked out, this could be big =
stuff. You can bet that Mr. Microsoft is checking this one out =
carefully!
