Palouse Audubon Society will sponsor a field trip to Mann Lake, Nez Perce
County, Idaho on Saturday, September 19. Mann Lake is currently being
drawn down, exposing extensive mud flats along the shoreline and attracting
up to a dozen species of shorebirds as well as many other waterbirds, gulls,
and terns. We will concentrate on the identification of the often difficult
shorebird group as well as observe other birds present. Migrant landbirds
such as sparrows, American Pipits, and warblers and a variety of raptors may
also be present. This field trip is free and open to all experience levels.
The leader is Charles Swift, who may be contacted at 208/883-0553 for
further information.

Meet at 8:00 AM in Moscow at the U.S. Forest Service Intermountain Research
Station at 1221 S. Main to carpool, or 9:00 AM at the main parking lot at
Mann Lake. To reach Mann Lake from the north end of Lewiston, follow US 12
West south into town, cross the Clearwater River on Memorial Bridge
and immediately take the first left (east) toward East Lewiston. Turn
left (east) onto East Main Street and go about a half mile to the
flashing yellow lights. Turn right (south) onto Lapwai (a.k.a. Lindsay
Creek) Road. At mile 1.5 the road forks; stay right on Lindsay Creek
Road (Nez Perce County Road 460) and follow it about 5 miles to its
terminus at Grelle Avenue. Turn left (east) onto Grelle Avenue and just
past the sharp right curve, turn left (east) onto East Powers Avenue
(a.k.a. Lapwai Road). Continue straight (east) past the grain towers to
the main parking lot.
