RED KNOT

*First of all, two reminders: Our first Birders' Night of the fall season
will be next Wednesday, September 23, 7:30 p.m., Room 159 at the Begbie
Building, University of Victoria. Bryan Gates will present a
slide-illustrated talk on birding in Newfoundland at it's spectacular Gros
Morne National Park. Everyone is welcome. Bring a novice birder, your
coffee mug and your binoculars.

**A correction on the Whitty's Lagoon field trip as noted in The Naturalist
magazine. That birding outing will be this Sunday, September 20, not
September 19 as advertised. Bruce Whittington will be the leader of the
group.

Thursday, September 17th

Over Mt. Tolmie were 3 AMERICAN KESTRELS, a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK and a
WESTERN TANAGER.

2 and possibly 3 RED KNOTS continue on the rocks at the foot of Bowker
Avenue in Oak Bay.

Also on the rocks were GREATER YELLOWLEGS, possible LESSER YELLOWLEGS
(confirmation requested), many Black-bellied Plovers, Dowitchers and Black
Turnstones.

At Cattle Point were again 3 Parasitic Jaegers as well as 10 American
Pipits.

Wednesday, September 16th

4 Parasitic Jaegers were seen together off Cattle Point.

Tuesday, September 15th
---------------------------------------
114 SANDHILL CRANES, a very large concentration, flew southeast over
Carmanah Point on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island.

3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were east of Ogden Point along the Dallas Road waterfront.

Monday, September 14th
---------------------------------------
At Carmanah Point were 6 Whimbrels, 21 Short-billed Dowitchers as well as
Sanderlings, Black-bellied Plovers and a single Ruddy Turnstone.

The migration continues and this advancing low-pressure area that we are
experiencing right now could send some interesting birds our way. Get out
and enjoy the birding.
