September 17, 1998, Thursday, 6:07 a.m. Bill Shelmerdine, Olympia,
(360) 866-9106. Yesterday there was a FRANKLIN'S GULL present in the
Mud Bay area. The bird was present in a large concentration of
BONAPARTE'S and other GULLS. In the area between Highway 101 and Mud
Bay Road in the small embankment there, the bird was present around 6:00
o'clock, which was around high tide. Good luck and good birding.

September 17, 1998, Thursday, 6:34 p.m. This is Bill Shelmerdine,
Olympia, Washington (360) 866-9106. And today, again at Mud Bay, there
was no FRANKLIN'S GULL, but this time there was a WILLET and a couple of
LESSER YELLOWLEGS with the large group of GREATER YELLOWLEGS that are
hanging out at Perry Creek, which is just slightly north and west of the
main Mud Bay area. Take the Madrona Beach Road, north from the Mud
Bay-Highway 101 exit, and look at high tide. There's a big haul out of
GREATER YELLOWLEGS. Good luck and good birding.

September 17, 1998, Thursday, 9:27 p.m. Paul Hicks here (360) 264-2462
with a report from the coast September 14 through 16. Birds of interest
at Tokeland on the 15th: 40 or so LONG-BILLED CURLEWS. Lots of MARBLED
GODWITS, at least 100. At the Elk River bridge, on the eastbound side
looking into Westport, there was a GREAT EGRET. At Bottle Beach, 2
PEREGRINES, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, 380 BLACK BELLIED PLOVERS. At
the Aberdeen sewage treatment plant, a female BUFFLEHEAD and at Ocean
Shores on the 16th, at the game range, 8 GOLDEN PLOVERS, one of them
AMERICAN. At Damon Point: a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 2 PECTORALS at the
pond, a possible KNOT and an unusual sighting of a SOOTY SHEARWATER
working the cove, north of the gated entrance there by the marina
entrance, probably a 100 feet from the shore. And at the marina, a
PEREGRINE, perhaps the same bird seen 2 days earlier at the north cove.
At Bowerman Basin on the 16th, a SWAINSON'S THRUSH, a LINCOLN'S SPARROW.
That's it.

September 18, 1998, Friday, 8:31 a.m. This is John Flavin. I live in
Lynnwood. My number is (425) 744-0805. On Thursday, September 17,
there was a RED KNOT present on Jetty Island across the river from
Everett. That's all I have to report. Thank you.
