Friday, September 18
--------------------
A MARBLED GODWIT was with 3 Whimbrels in Spoon Bay which is at the foot of
Lansdowne Road in Oak Bay. Those birds have been there for a few days.

SOOTY SHEARWATERS were seen in scattered groups off Race Rocks on the
southern tip of Vancouver Island.

Up to 70 Turkey Vultures have accumulated over Rocky Point again. This is
typical of them on the southern tip of Vancouver Island in September and
early October. Numbers should increase from now until the end of September
and even into early October.

Also over Rocky Point were 6 migrant Greater White-fronted Geese.

A Parasitic Jaeger was off Rocky Point.


Thursday, September 17
----------------------
A federal research vessel returning from well off the British Columbia
coast reports many NORTHERN FULMARS over Laparuse Banks.

First heard in September, a MURPHY'S PETREL and a SOUTH POLAR SKUA were
well offshore perhaps in the vicinity of the old Ocean Station Papa.

Up to 4 Parasitic Jaegers were off Cattle Point in Oak Bay.

2 RED KNOTS and other shorebirds were still on the Rocks at Bowker Avenue
in Oak Bay.

AMERICAN PIPITS have appeared in many areas. Check carefully through these
groups of Pipits, as there could be a RED-THROATED PIPIT among them.


Wednesday, September 16

There was a second-hand report of a LONG-TAILED JAEGER seen off Clover
Point on September 15 and 16. Confirmation would be appreciated.

Those interested in a PELAGIC BIRDING TRIP out of Ucluelet on October 10
and or 11 to Laparuse Bank, should call Roger Foxall of Victoria at 658-3185.

BIRDERS NIGHT is this coming Wednesday, September 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Room
159 of the Begbie Building, University of Victoria. Bryan Gates will
present a slide talk on birding in Newfoundland.

Bruce Whittington will be taking a FIELD TRIP TO WITTY'S LAGOON on Sunday,
September 20, not on September 19 as indicated in the Victoria Natural
History Society magazine The Naturalist.
