On Sunday, there 12 GREAT EGRETS, in a pond visible from Highway 14.
Saturday afternoon when I conducted my monthly census there, only five
were present. Also one the Refuge were WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, a lingering
pair of HOUSE WRENS, and LINCOLN'S SPARROWS in every brush patch. The
most interesting sight was that of an RIVER OTTER chasing fish in the
nearly empty drainage canal. Following it's path as it swam beneath the
surface was easy, small Yellow Bullhead launched themselves from the
water in their escape attempt.
At Vancouver Lake there were over 350 SANDHILL CRANES along Lower
River Road.
