Columbia Estuary Report - 9/27/98

The down slope migration is underway. Obvious movements of
VARIED THRUSH, HERMIT THRUSH, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, YELLOW-
RUMPED WARBLER, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, FOX SPARROW and GOLDEN-
CROWNED SPARROW were evident throughout the week.

Summer ain't over yet, however. There are still a few BARN
SWALLOWS around. YELLOW WARBLERS, COMMON YELLOWTHROATS and
a still singing ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER can still be found at
Ft Stevens.

LAPLAND LONGSPURS and AMERICAN PIPITS are still reasonably
easy to find at the SJCR. A single WHIMBREL has been hanging
out at the big pond.

A big movement of loons is going on over the ocean. All
three regularly occurring species can be found in good numbers.
SOOTY SHEARWATERS are still moving past the SJCR, though the
numbers have fallen considerably from last week.
