Tweeters,

A White-headed Woodpecker was seen near the Bumping Lake Dam today (27
September 1998) by Susan Stepniewski and Ellen Smith. This observation is
from a forest type (Douglas fir, western white pine, lodgepole pine) not
favored by White-headed Woodpeckers.

My observation of a White-headed Woodpecker nest on the southwest slopes of
Mt. Adams this summer, the record on Fort Lewis in Thurston County a week
ago and this report from Bumping Lake are all sitings from west of their
usual haunts. One thought for these unusual locations for this species: a
widespread ponderosa pine seed crop failure this year?
