Dear Tweeters:

In response to Bill Woods' request about where Mandarin Ducks nest, one or
two pairs have apparently nested here in Naramata for the last few years
(just north of Penticton in the Okanagan Valley). A female hung out at the
local beach two summers ago raising one young; friends have seen them
inspecting nest-boxes (but not nesting), and there were a couple of pairs
at a local pond this spring (but I didn't check later for broods). I'm not
sure where these birds came from, but they've been "wild" since at least
the summer of '94. Some of them stay each winter as well, hanging out with
Mallards on the beach.
