My next door neighbor in north Burien (which is just south of Seattle)
mentioned a couple weeks ago that he had seen a pileated woodpecker in his
yard.

I cannot recall the last weekend at my father-in-law's home on Vashon Island
when I have not seen a pileated woodpecker. His property is mostly wooded,
and I have persuaded him to leave numerous dead trees standing. Several have
been chipped away at, almost to the point of leaving me wondering how the
trees are still standing.

As to other Burien birds, this morning I saw one evening grosbeak waking up
and preening himself in the madrona treetops next door. An occasional pine
siskin is visiting our feeders again. Junco's have been back for two weeks.
