Hugh Jennings added a number of good places to your list of Bay Area birding spots, Doug. Let me add a couple more: there is a good south bay S.F. Bay Refuge access from Alviso, off hwy 237. The headquarters there has a boardwalk out into a marsh. Also, consider going up the Mt. Hamilton Road to Grant Ranch County Park, then over the mountain and out towards Livermore. Lots of oak woodlands birds, some scarcities like Lawrence's goldfinch. There is also a good local birding book called, as I recall, "Birding at the Bottom of the Bay", available at a number of Bay Area bookstores.
