Subject: purple martins houses for Duwamish?

Dear Tweeters,
Anybody want to help put up Purple Martin houses on the Duwamish this Sunday?
This will be a somewhat similar situation to Operation Tree Swallow, where a
number of us birdwatched, handed up tools and tried to be helpful while the
intrepid Martin Muller climbed high and did all the hard work of installing
nest boxes for Tree Swallows. On Sunday it will be Kevin Li who does the
high-rise installation work but as usual it's a case of the more the merrier.
(Kevin is the guy who came to the rescue of the the Shilshole Martin couple
last year and has been working on Martin restoration for a while. He balked
at me mentioning this and promptly e-mailed me a list of ten or so people he
said also deserved credit if he was going to get any. On the list along with
the late Jack Davis who pioneered Martin restoration in this area is State
Senator Ken Jacobson, who is apparently trying to lock up the entire swallow
vote in his district.)
We expect to be at the site, Terminal 105, at about 12:30 Sunday.
Thanks, Ed Newbold, Seattle.
Kevin's note to me with directions to the site (from the north) follows:
For a northern approach:
1: take I-5 SOUTH
2:Take the W SEATTLE FWY/COLUMBIAN WAY exit, exit number 163A.
(0.3 km)
3:Keep RIGHT at the fork in the ramp. 0.3 miles
(0.4 km)
4:Merge onto W SEATTLE BRIDGE. 0.8 miles
(1.2 km)
5:Take the ramp towards HARBOR ISLAND/11TH AVE. SW/TERMINAL 18. 0.1 miles
(0.1 km)
6:Turn SLIGHT LEFT onto ramp. 0.1 miles
(0.1 km)
7:Merge onto S SPOKANE ST. 0.0 miles
(0.1 km)
8:Stay straight to go onto SW SPOKANE ST. 0.8 miles
(1.2 km)
9:Turn SLIGHT RIGHT onto unnamed road. 0.0 miles
(0.1 km)
10:Turn RIGHT onto W MARGINAL WAY SW. Look to your left for Port of Seattle
T105 Public access, only a few hundred yards south of the West Seattle
Bridge.

In essence, this means getting off the W Seattle Bridge before the high
rise, crossing Harbor Island and the Duwamish River, and taking a hard right
(south) along the west shore of the river.

For side trips in that area, birders can check for: eagle activity at the
nest across from Salty's at Alki, possible osprey activity on the nest
platform just south of T105, or peregrine activity on the West Seattle
Bridge trestle. There also is a new Port of Seattle waterfront park just SE
of Salty's, as well as fairly new public access at T107.

Work gloves might be handy. I'll be bringing 24 ft ladder, hammers, nails, a
cordless drill, and various bolts and screws and woods. I suspect we'll have
more than enough people to physically install boxes, but should be fun,
especially if the weather is decent.

Kevin
