A surprising number of birds do this. And frequently
they fall into a pattern of travelling just about the
same distance underwater each dive.

So, if you see a crazy long-haired dude with a huge
telephoto running back and forth on marina docks,
calm down. It's just me, not a camera-wielding
terrorist. I'm running to the spot where I expect
the bird to pop up. Of course, they can't dive right
away, either, giving one a few seconds to nab a couple
of shots until they pull the plug once again.

Hmmm...I probably shouldn't give away these little
shooter's tricks :)
