Recently there was a posting about piliated woodpeckers eating apples.
I had a chat with Ranger Mary Welborn over at Bridle Trails SP and she
told me that she regularly has P's eat apples from her tree at home.
These apples are at the very top and not easily harvested. She usually
waits for them to fall. She says she can clearly see the birds eating
fruit down to the core. They also make sauce with bits of apple flying
as with woodchips when they dig in trees.
