Interesting times on the beach at Herring Cove this week. A good spring
storm washed in some seaweed with herring eggs attached. Three very
different groups of birds are after the nutritious treat: gulls, mallards,
and goldeneyes (at least a hundred or so goldeneyes). With the goldeneyes
are 2 or 3 buffleheads. Sometimes the bulk of the goldeneyes are way up in
the shallows, poking around like puddle ducks in water they can stand in,
and the mallards are cruising around behind them, trying their best to look
like diving birds that just happen to be staying on the surface. Most
creatures are opportunists, aren't they?

Oh -- first heard and then saw the first yellowlegs of the season day
before yesterday. Rufous hummingbirds have been here at least a week.
