Hi Tweets,

I went to the Ballard Locks in Seattle this morning and was able to
observe at close range a HOODED MERGANSER (female) catching and eating
crabs. The crabs were small, about the size of a quarter (including the
legs). The merganser would dive for the crabs and I could see her
hunting under the water among the rocks. When she got a crab she would
come to the surface and spend a minute or so rapidly shaking the crab and
readjusting it in her bill before she deemed it ready to swallow whole.
Other highlights:

kingfishers (male and female)
barrow's goldeneyes
red-necked and western grebes
common and red-breasted mergansers
