Yesterday morning I drove south on Highway 97 past the Toppenish National
Wildlife Refuge to Satus Creek searching for Bushtits. After walking along
the creek for about an hour I found a single bird in a large cottonwood
tree. Bushtits are year-round residents of this area but this was the first
time I had found one there.

On the refuge I saw 31 Black-necked Stilts split among three different
locations. Eleven were at a large pond on the west side of Hwy 97 near the
turnoff to the refuge headquarters. Three more were found at the south end
of Old Goldendale Road and seventeen were at ponds at the south end of
Lateral A.

Also at the south end of Lateral A were two American Avocets, one Greater
Yellowlegs and two immature Bald Eagles.

Cinnamon Teal were at all three areas.
