I checked the Steigerwald N.W.R. near Washougal in Clark County again
today. There were still 2 BLACK-NECKED STILTS in the ponds visible from
the Historical Marker pull-off at milepost 18.9 Highway 14, (you do need
a scope). The 18 ROSS'S GEESE were in with the Canada Geese on the East
side of the Barns along the dike trail. To reach this trail exit Highway
14 at milepost 17, onto 32nd Street. This is the entrance road into the
Port of Camas - Washougal Industrial Area. Go South to the dike and turn
right park near the access road onto the dike (please do not block it).
You can walk about two miles along the top of the dike and bird both the
Refuge and the channel of the Columbia River, North of Reed Island. The
Barns are about a half mile out from the parking spot and the geese are
usually in the fields on either side of the barns, if they aren't in the
fields along Highway 14.
