For many years there was an osprey nest on the south side of I-90 in the
borrow pond just before Cle Elum. The nest sat at the top of the tallest
possible pole, proabably a branchless snag. Year after year Ma and Pa
raised clutches of young, heads visible from the freeway. About 3 years
ago, a new nest appeared about a mile east on the top of a high tension
power pole, right at the exit ramp to Cle Elum. We figured it belonged to
some of the kids, too broke for waterfront. Last fall the old nest in the
pond disappeared, probably blown down. Last weekend, however, we saw a
single Osprey sitting on the top of the pole. A contractor preparing a bid?
A new property owner? We are hoping a new nest will appear one of these
days. In the meanwhile, the kids are doing fine at the freeway ramp house.

P.S. The old nest near the State Park on the South Shore of Lake Chelan
looks occupied again this year. Last year was the first year in memory that
anyone had seen an Osprey on it.
