This morning (April 24th) I visited the Nisqually Rufous Hummingbird
nest Phil Kelley discovered on the April 10th BHAS field trip. There are
nestlings now. When the female left I observed a head pop up. Also saw
the nest wall bulge once as apparently the young moved about inside.
When the mother returned she sat on the side of the nest and poked her
bill down into the nest in for sure 2 and perhaps 3 different places.
She then sat on the nest for a while, but eventually flew off again.
This time I definitely saw the tops of the young's heads rise from
different sides of the nest, so I' pretty sure there are at least 2.
Again the mother returned, poked her bill down into different corners of
the nest, and settled down on the nest. The young heads I observed were
dark, dark brown but with bright orange bill structures extending down
their "throats." I was not looking through the spotting scope's eyepiece
but through a camera viewfinder, so I didn't get a real good look at the
youngster's heads.
