Having just returned from Costa Rica in February, I can agree that it is a
wonderful place to spend a couple of weeks (especially to get away from a
Pacific Northwest winter like this one). The birds were abundant, the food
was great, and the people wonderful. Great looks at many new (for me)
species.....most noteworthy were the Resplendent Quetzal, and the many
Egrets and Herons (Rufescent Tiger-Heron being the best), the Trogans, the
Motmots, the Toucans, the Manakins, as well as many new species in
familiar families (Woodpeckers, Tanagers, Hummingbirds, etc.). Travelling
with a guide was a definite help for us.

Two books (in addition to Stiles and Skutch) that I found helpful were:

Beletsky: Costa Rica The Ecotravelers' Wildlife Guide.....colored
illustrations of the most common amphibians, reptiles, mammals, (as well
as birds) and habitat photos, and plant drawings.

Blake and Becher: The New Key to Costa Rica....especially good if
travelling on your own. Contains maps, information on lodging, eating,
parks and reserves, sights not to miss, etc. all described in sufficient
detail to be of real help.

I got mine at University Bookstore (on the Ave).

Have a great trip...........
