I know this discussion is over now, and I won't say I'm not glad, but I just had to chime in. I grew up on the "east side" and I never knew there were elk on the west side. Or in forested landscape for that matter. I've only ever seen them out in the open. Now isn't that ironic?

I just wish I could get back in touch with him and tell him my first impression upon spotting the tracks was right after all! Those were elk prints! The hiker who told me elk weren't on the east side suggested "mule deer".

Are elk the biggest of the deer like beasts in our state?
