Thanks to all the tweeters who responded to my plea for rosy-finch
localities. They seem to be scattered all along the Cascades north of Mt.
Rainier, but oh so scarce. One respondent considered ptarmigan easier to
find! Nesting in rock crevices, the finches may be on cliffs well above
the usual hiking trails. From my experience, it's easier to find them when
they flock up in the fall before descending to the lowlands, but they are
very patchy then, too. I've had good luck with them on Burroughs Mountain
(above Sunrise) in September, but not on every visit.
