On the way home from work today stopped at Nisqually to check on the
Rufous Hummingbird nest. Didn't have scope, just some old binocs. The
Mom was away when I got there. I couldn't see anything in the nest. So I
sat on some the boardwalk lumber lying around and just held the
binoculars up to my eyes, resting my elbows on my knees. Finally, after
several minutes, I saw an extended small bill rise up out of the nest,
much longer than the bill on the baby hummer I saw last Saturday. The
baby bird moved around a bit and I could make out various parts of a
downy body now and then. Eventually the mother returned and sat on the
side of the nest, dipping her bill down into it to feed the young. And
again I thought she dipped her bill into two different "corners" of the
round nest, as if feeding two. Am looking forward to having more time to
observe with a scope over the weekend, if the rain isn't too bad.

Good Birding!
