I haven't heard of any loggers CONVICTED of killing Spotted Owls but I
know loggers who carry shotguns in their trucks for that purpose. And
some of them are working the woods of Northern Idaho and weren't aware
that Spotted Owls aren't even there. They said that they would make sure
that they never showed up too.
And while birding at Netarts Bay, in Oregon, I met some hunters who were
pursuing a Common Eider that had been on a Rare Bird Alert. It seems that
at Hunting and Fishing Shows there are contests involving mounted game
birds and the more unusual the better. We may "tick" a bird on a Rare
Bird Alert and others would just as soon "take" it.
