Spotted owls HAVE been shot and killed, with the presumed suspects
being folks living in logging communities (who may or may not actually
work as loggers or in a mill).

This is not "extremist speculation" from conservationists, but
published reports by the likes of the Oregon State Police and
your Washington counterparts.
