A couple years ago one of the Osprey nests at Everett failed
(I assume to predation) when the chicks were about a week or
two old. A couple weeks later what I believe to be the same
adult pair built a "frustration nest" near the original nest
site. It was not this late in the season but it was probably
too late for a successful brood. As I recall it was
mid-July. I have also observed on many occassions the mom
Osprey heading out and getting a stick after the young have
been fed and then incorporating the stick into the nest. I
assume this is teaching the young something about nest
building and it is done after the kids are fed because they
are all awake at this time. The character of the flight of
the female is one of "bird on a mission"; straight, low, and
powered to the stick site and quick return. None of the flap,
flap, glide, or circling around common in other flights.
