In 8/17/99 Seattle Times "Science" section was a brief note about coyotes
"disappearing" around San Diego, and the threat to birds. The coyotes kept
feral cats and other animals that prey on birds down, now the pressure is
greater on the birds. Seems that it truely is a"question of balance " in
nature.

Today around 6:00 pm the gardeners at Thomas Street were given quite a show,
a young hawk flew over and perched on the tall firs about a half a block
from "our" crows in the cedars next door. The "crow on house watch" flew out
immediatley to harress the hawk. Hawk didn't move, crow flew off cawing an
alarm, suddenly about 8 crows flew in almost in fighter plane formation from
the South and started a full attack, hawk flew up, but just soared around
the area, crows kept up the battle with even more crows flying in from the
Northeast! Hawk finally gave up, and was last seen flying over Broadway
followed by at least a dozen cawing crows. Now that sure beat the Blue
Angels in my book!
