Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This
recording was made Thursday August 19. If you have anything to add call

Recently a BROAD-WINGED HAWK was observed along Hwy 97, south of Madras.
It may still be in the area.

A HORNED PUFFIN was seen August 11 just offshore between Coos Bay and
Bandon. Another was off Cape Foulweather August 14. On August 3 one was
seen south of Bandon.

Many birds are now on the move with flocks of warblers and other land
birds being reported. Movements along the coast are increasing with many
SOOTY SHEARWATERS offshore, and loons an scoters conspicously passing
southward. On August 18, 23 GREAT EGRETS were at Yaquina Bay as
northbound birds arrive in numbers. Large numbers of juvenile COMMON
MURRES are now coming in dead and dying on northern Oregon and southern
Washington beaches. The lack of upwellings offshore may be causing
starvation among these birds.

Two ANCIENT MURRELETS were off Port Orford August 17. On August 14 five
migrant AMERICAN WIGEON and 8 GREEN-WINGED TEAL were off Ona Beach State
Park south of Newport, along with over 1000 SURF SCOTERS. The next day 80
RHINOCEROS AUKLETS, 45 MARBLED MURRELETS, 2 TUFTED PUFFINS, and an
ANCIENT MURRELET were off Boiler Bay. Over 200 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were
there also.

On August 14 a small flock of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were at the Trout
Creek Swamp, in the Cascades west of Sisters.
