Hello Tweeters,
After all week on the road Birdwatching and finding new Dragonflies, i
needed a rest.
I started Tuesday morning at 5.00 AM.The weather supposed to be in my
favour for the next few days.My first stop was onTwin Lakes which is in
Stevens Co.off HYW.20. Going up to Black Lake the road is OK, but going
further to Twin Lakes is rather difficult to drive. The road is verry
narrow and got deep holes to maneuvre the car.I went there on my last trip,
but the weather was not the best.The Campsite is free one of this places
which is kept by Natural recourse.All the campsites are direct on the Lake.
I stopped and looked over the Lake,i could not believe my eye, right in
front about30 feet away the big moose stood there in to the Lake. I din't
think of any thing than getting my Camera and start taken photos. I was so
close i had to take of my Teleconverter.The Moose start sniffing put his
nose up in the air, and slowly moving out of the water to the other side
which wasn't that far. I still taken more shots. Than all of sudden he
start comming back to my side where i was standing hidden behind a bush.
Than i decide better to leave. Not to i got to Meadow Lake i found out not
ever gettting to close to this huge Mamals.Finding out today i maybe
collected a new Dragonflie in this Co.the selden found Lance-tipped Darner
it been only found in eight Countys, but i have to turn it over to Dennis
since it is first for Steven's Co.
The next day i went back to Bunchgrass Meadow which goes of Sullivan Lake
Road on forest road 1395
I missed one Dragonflie there the last time"The Zigzag Darner which is only
found in Okanagon Co. Long Swamp and Rogers Lake and here in Pend-Oreille
Co.This time i saw many of this species. Not only i got a male i also
collected a female which was not scanned on Dennis Web-site, so also here i
got rewarded to come the second time.I saw a moose here last time, but not
verry close and i had lot's of American Pipit in the low Marsh Grass.
On Wednesday i drove to Big Meadow Lake which goes out of Colville on
Aladdin Road. it is 26 miles to the Campsite. Also there is no Fee to pay
here either, and this camp is well kept the trails are good. I took the
Lake trail in the morning to get familiar with the area. I Found many
Pileated Woodpeckers on this short hike which was around 3 ore 4 milesThere
also was few Shorebirds around the Lakes 2 Greater Yellowlegs 1 lone
Western Sandpiper and many Spotted Sandpipers.After the Sun was out bright
i went to the Meadow on to the Creek where i saw the 4 Bohemian Waxwing
with 1 Cedar Waxwing. The most exiting Dragonflie was the male Brush-tipped
Emerald which also only been found in 5 Countys. This was onother record
for Pend Oreille. I had to give up my only one i found as a record. New was
also was the Marsh Bluet and the male and female Lyre-tipped
Spreadwing.It's getting late in the season, many species are not found
anymore. So next year i will come here in ende June and middle of July.Many
many Whiteface and striped Meadowhawks are comming out now, so you can tell
this season is getting late for Dragonflies.
