We went out on Terry Wahl's August 21 pelagic trip from Westport and birded
Ocean Shores the afternoon before, Tokeland and Bottle Beach after. The
pelagic trip was a good one, average numbers but above average quality &
variety of birds & fine weather. Shorebirds are on the move but they are
scattered. Following are some highlights.

Pelagics:

BLACK-FOOTED ALBATROSS 100+
LAYSAN ALBATROSS 1, seen well
N. FULMAR 250+
PINK-FOOTED SHEARWATER 30+
BULLER'S SHEARWATER 5+
SOOTY SHEARWATER 5000+, mostly in the Westport channel in the morning
SHORT-TAILED SHEARWATER 1, seen well
FORK-TAILED STORM PETREL 50+
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE 300+
RED PHALAROPE 3+
POMARINE JAEGER 1 subadult
PARASITIC JAEGER 1 light adult, excellent views
LONG-TAILED JAEGER 3, 2 adults, one sub-adult put on a fine show
SOUTH-POLAR SKUA 2, dark and apparently adult, one for good long looks
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE 1
SABINE'S GULL 15, adults with black heads
ARCTIC TERN 3
COMMON MURRE 200+, better numbers of chicks than in the past few years
RHINOCEROS AUKLET 100+
TUFTED PUFFIN 1, adult, in Westport Channel

Other birds of interest:

BROWN PELICAN 1000+, mostly juveniles, exceptional numbers
AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER 2, adults nearly in basic (low)
WILLET 1, at Bill's Spit, Ocean Shores with 50+ Long-billed Curlews,
Whimrels, and Marbled Godwits
WANDERING TATTLER 3, end of Ocean Shores jetty & Westport jetty from boat
SURFBIRD 60+, Ocean Shores & Westport jetties, some still in alternate plumage
BAIRD'S SANDPIPER 3 juveniles, tip of Damon Pt., Ocean Shores (with one
American Golden Plover)

We looked for the Bar-tailed Godwits at Tokeland but couldn't find the big
godwit flock due to the tide. Steve Mlodinow et al. probably located them
later Saturday.
