I finally picked up a copy of David S. Wilcove's *The Condor's Shadow: The
Loss and Recover of Wildlife in America*, published earlier this year by W.
H. Freeman and Company. Wilcove, Senior Ecologist at the Environmental
Defense Fund, offers beautifully written, gripping accounts of the human
impact on the North American landscape and wildlife, past and present. For
my money, the must-read book of the year. It's already in its second
printing.
