Was so glad to hear Common Nighthawk were together on their migration
home. I saw them last on Thursday night - we had only one pair this
year - they must have had only 2 chicks, as only four have been out
these past few weeks (we have had as many as 6 after nesting season in
earlier years)- and as many as 2 pair & 10 fledglings). This is the
first year I have not have them gather over our home in Discovery Bay.
We have had as many as 100 gather - usually not until after September 1
- spending several leisurely, warm summer afternoon & nights, hawking
insects - then departing together. This year they were 13 days later
than usual in their arrival (for 8 years they have arrived on 6/1-this
year it was 6/13). This departure is about 7 days earlier - must be the
crummy weather. Would love to hear of other reportings as they head
home for the winter.
