On August 17, Ruth Fischer and I (Bob Woodley) birded the ponds north of
Prosser. The pond on Gap Road contained SPOTTED, WESTERN, LEAST, and 4
SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, The pond along Bunn Road contained only ducks but
overhead was a TURKEY VULTURE and 2 Red-tailed Hawks.

Ruth Fischer and Nancy LaFramboise checked the Paterson Slough Unit of the
Umatilla NWR on August 18 and among other things found 4 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVER, a STILT SANDPIPER, a WILSON'S PHALAROPE, 20 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES,
and a BONAPARTE'S GULL.

The following day at the Yakima Delta, Nancy LaFramboise and I (BW)
observed an early female BUFFLEHEAD, a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, and a
CHIPPING SPARROW among the more common species.

I (BW) birded with Craig Corder and Judy Stevens on August 21 and we found
a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER on the Yakima Delta, while on Bateman Island we
saw WARBLING VIREOS and ORANGE-CROWNED, NASHVILLE, and YELLOW WARBLERS plus
1 BLACK-AND WHITE WARBLER. The following day, again on Bateman Island,
Craig & Judy added a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH to the warbler list but did not
relocate the Black-and-White.

On August 23, Ruth Fischer and I observed a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER in
alternate plumage on the Yakima Delta and 4 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES. I later
found 1 STILT SANDPIPER there.

Also on the 23rd, Dennis Johnson saw a female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK at his
Richland feeder.

Ruth Fischer and Nancy LaFramboise found the same or another NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH and a GRAY CATBIRD on Bateman Island on August 24, while on the
25th, they observed some Black-capped Chickadees mobbing a WESTERN
SCREECH-OWL in the Columbia Point Area.

Also on the 25th, I (BW) found a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 2 STILT SANDPIPERS,
and 1 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE on the Yakima Delta.

Lastly, today, August 27, I (BW) was surprised to see 5 RED-NECKED GREBES
in alternate plumage at Columbia Point.
