Birders,

I thought you might be interested in the attached report of a
NORTHERN HAWK OWL at Upper Hat Creek, B.C. (west of Cache Creek) on
December 3 and 4. Even though the same bird (apparently) was seen 5 km
apart on the 2 days, past experience is that wintering Northern Hawk
Owls often stay in the same area for weeks or months. With any luck,
this bird will stick around so that others can see it.

Subject: [bcintbird] northern hawk owl

Upper Hat Creek, Dec 3rd, A NORTHERN HAWK OWL sat on the fat fibre
optic cable which now graces our Upper Hat Creek telephone line. He
was at the Duck Ranch which we lease in the centre of the valley. The
first AMERICAN DIPPER appeared behind our house at Twin Creeks Ranch.
A few winter regularly on Hat Creek because of the springs which keep
parts open even in some of the coldest spells. They do courtship here
but are gone at nesting time.
This morning woke up (Dec 4) to discover a NORTHERN HAWK OWL perched
atop a gate post 30 feet from our bedroom eating a mouse. Almost
certainly it is the same owl but about 5 kilometers from the Duck
Ranch. I have not had such a close up look at this seldom seen owl
since Mary and Tom Collins showed us the nesting pair up in the
Monashees behind Cherryville.
