Today, at my home near Shelton and close to sea level, I saw
the first varied thrush of the winter. We ususally have a
few hanging around all winter. but I didn't see the first
one last winter until 11 January 1999.

Also today: pair of crows sitting next to each other on a
maple branch, gently touching bills; winter wren foraging
under my deck; two female hooded mergansers near my lake
shore; and spotted towhees calling on this day of soft
winter sun.
