Columbia Estuary Report - 12/05/1999

The Lower Columbia Birders took a trip across to the
Wasshington side of the estuary on Saturday. The Lewis
Unit of Willapa Bay NWR has been redesigned and is holding
water in areas that were former more vegetated.

Three TRUMPETER SWANS were at Black Lake in Ilwaco a CLARK'S
GREBE was at Ilwaco Boat basin. Loons and grebes were well
represented. LEAST SANDPIPERS were roosting on the boat
basin docks and in the parking lot. Those into waterfowl of
dubious origin may want to look for the NORTHERN SHELDUCK
and two GRAYLAGS also at the boat basin.

A dark-phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was on Sand Island across
from the Ft Canby boat landing and a NORTHERN SHRIKE put
on a good show on Chinook Valley Rd.

The ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS have returned to Bucky Barnett's
feeder across from the Flavel House in Astoria. A bright
yellow ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was there Sunday morning.

ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were also found at the mitigation
bank and Warrento Boat Basin this morning. Three OCWA
and no other warblers... very strange. The Mitigation
Bank Sparrow count for today follows:
