Subject: Forest Roadless Areas Action Alert


President Clinton's proposal to protect the remaining unroaded areas in
our National Forests, which provide critical habitat for many sensitive
bird species, is one of the most significant conservation efforts in
American history. This proposed policy needs your support to counter
the efforts of those who are fighting for access to these unprotected
wild forests for logging, mining, and motorized recreation.



WHAT YOU CAN DO

1. Write a letter to the National Forest Service, expressing support for
the roadless policy and urging that it:
- include all roadless areas 1,000 acres or larger
- include the Tongass National Forest (now excluded from the
proposal)
- prohibit road building and logging in all NFS roadless areas
- prohibit off-road vehicles, mining, ski areas and other
environmentally damaging activities
- immediately cancel any unsold projects for such activities

2. Attend one of the regional and forest-by-forest open houses on the
roadless area proposal. The next meeting in the Seattle area, for the
Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, is:

The Seattle Audubon Society has written a letter (12/7/99) to the Forest
Service strongly supporting the proposal to protect roadless areas in
National Forests.
