At mention of varied thrushes, can't resist mentioning
that yesterday we had several in the back and side
yards (at least 3--they scattered when I opened the
door and then noticed them). Saw a couple later doing
the "robin-thing" in the back lawn. See them
occasionally around the neighborhood, usually in a
gang.

I pitched two apple halves out there for them but
unfortunately Squiggy (the squirrel) found them first
and carred them off, presumably to bury like she does
everything else this time of year. I'll watch for an
especially BIG hole in the front flower bed... I
usually wire the fruit to a branch in cold weather and
should have known better than to leave it loose.
Think this cold weather (finally) will bring the rest
of the late migraters in, at last?

Also a lovely pair of Bewick's wrens came in from the
surrounding woods to grace the feeder area.
