The Birds of Midway Atoll
A slide presentation by Ivan Summers

Thursday, January 20th, 7PM

(from NE 45th St, turn south on Mary Gates Memorial Way to NE 41st St)

These three small islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean are home to
2 million seabirds including Laysan Albatross, Black-footed Albatross,
White "Fairy" Terns, Red-billed Tropicbirds, Bristle-thighed Curlews,
noddys, petrels, shearwaters, boobies, and frigatebirds to name a few.
The sight and sound of birds are always present and often overwhelming.
Site of a US Naval Air Station from 1940 to 1988 and focus of probably
the most important naval battle of WWII, Midway Atoll is now a National
Wildlife Refuge. Open to the public on a limited basis; the
infrastructure of war has been converted to benefit wildlife and the
travelers who come to visit. Join Ivan as he leads us through these
incredible islands, explores their natural beauty and reflects on their
important historical past.

Doors open at 6:30 PM. Refreshments, Nature Shop Selections, the
Conservation Committee Booth, and the Master Birder Booth will be
available. Reports on SAS happenings and will proceed the program.
